One dead, 30 injured in Dutch train derailment NHK

A passenger train has derailed just outside The Hague, in the Netherlands. Officials say one person is dead and at least 30 are injured, many seriously.

Video shows emergency crews pulling passengers from the wreckage.

Media reports say the train's front car left the tracks and plowed into a field around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. A fire broke out in the rear car but was extinguished.

A Dutch rail authority spokesperson says the accident was caused by a collision with construction equipment.

Jeroen Wienen said, "Behind me you can see trains, there is a passenger train and a freight train. They both hit a crane which was in the tracks and as you can see the damage is enormous."

Wienen said such accidents are unusual in the Netherlands. He added that investigators are working to find out what happened and prevent a recurrence.
