Russian warplane crashes into apartment building, killing 13 NHK

A Russian warplane crashed into an apartment building in the southern Russian region of Krasnodar on Monday, killing 13 people.

Local officials say the nine-story residential building in the city of Yeysk was engulfed in flames. They say 13 residents, including children, were killed and about 19 others were injured.

Russia's defense ministry says the engine of a Sukhoi Su-34 bomber caught fire and came down during a training mission, citing the pilots who ejected from the plane.

The Russian Investigative Committee is looking into the incident.

Yeysk is a port city on the Sea of Azov. The Russian-controlled Ukrainian city of Mariupol is located on the opposite shore.

Russia's presidential office says that President Vladimir Putin has instructed his ministers to fly to the site of the accident to provide the necessary assistance to the victims.
