An active front has brought record rainfall to Akita Prefecture in northeastern Japan.
                
Weather officials are calling on residents in northern parts of the Tohoku region to be on alert for flooding in low-lying areas, overflowing rivers and landslides through Sunday.
                
The Meteorological Agency says northern parts of the Tohoku region, mainly on the Sea of Japan side, have been hit by continued rain as warm, moist air flows toward the front.
                
The town of Happo in Akita received 196 millimeters of rain during a 12-hour period through 10:40 a.m. on Saturday, and the city of Oga, also in Akita, had 179.5 millimeters in 12 hours through noon. They both marked the heaviest rainfall since the agency began taking statistics.
                
Landslide alerts have been issued for some parts of Akita and Aomori prefectures.
                
Some rivers in Akita have overflown.
                
The front is expected to remain stationary and active near the Tohoku region.
                
Weather officials say that in the 24 hours through Sunday noon, up to 150 millimeters of rain is expected in northern Tohoku and 120 millimeters in southern Tohoku.
                
And during the 24 hours through noon Monday, 50 to 100 millimeters of rain is forecast in northern and southern Tohoku.
