The head of Myanmar's junta has suggested the possibility of holding an election in the country. But he says it might not be held nationwide. The military's top general Min Aung Hlaing made the comment in an interview with Russia's Tass news agency. He said in order to hold an election, the voter list would need to be organized correctly to avoid voting errors. He also said once the country is stabilized, an election could take place "in relevant areas" even if voting is not held nationwide. The junta seized power in a 2021 coup, after claiming the previous year's election was fraudulent. It ousted and detained Aung San Suu Kyi, whose party had won by a landslide, and cracked down on civilian protesters. The junta has since said it would hold a general election. But a return to civilian rule remains in doubt as the military has repeatedly extended a state of emergency every six months, citing the deterioration of public security. The junta is struggling to fend off a growing armed resistance. Fighting has been intensifying since late last year between the military and ethnic minority militants together with pro-democracy forces.
