Beijing official suggests Chinese military drills around Taiwan will continue NHK

A spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office suggests Beijing will continue conducting military drills around Taiwan.

Zhu Fenglian told reporters on Wednesday that the Chinese military would never stop its actions to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity as long as Taiwan pro-independence elements' provocations continue.

China reacted sharply to the inauguration speech last week by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te in which he denied Beijing's claim that Taiwan is part of China.

After the speech, China's military said it would conduct drills around Taiwan last Thursday and Friday.
The Chinese military has yet to announce the conclusion of the exercises. Zhu indicated Beijing will continue to conduct similar military drills.

She also criticized Taiwan's new leader's stance to pursue peace and prosperity through exchanges and cooperation with China.

Zhu said that although Lai expressed his desire for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, in reality, he firmly upheld the pro-independence stance, fueling a row between the two sides.

The Chinese government has stressed its position that it will not hold dialogue with Lai's administration unless it accepts the "one-China" principle. Beijing is further stepping up military pressure on Taiwan.
