US tech giant Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has met Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio in Tokyo to discuss artificial intelligence.
The owner of Meta Platforms, the operator of Facebook and Instagram, visited the prime minister's office on Tuesday.
The meeting lasted about 30 minutes. Government sources said the two exchanged views on the risk of generative AI. The Meta CEO reportedly expressed interest in investing in Japan.
Zuckerberg later told reporters, "We had a good, productive conversation about AI and the future of technology." He added, "I'm really excited for the work that is happening here in Japan."
During the visit, Zuckerberg posted videos of his time in Japan on social media, such as eating at a hamburger chain and testing the sharpness of a Japanese sword.
As competition in generative AI is heating up among major US tech companies, Meta is strengthening its business by promoting its platform technologies. However, calls are growing for the tech giants to take measures to ensure safety and protect privacy.
