Monday was another sweltering hot day across Japan, with maximum temperatures reaching dangerous levels in some places. Aga Town in Niigata Prefecture saw 38.4 degrees, followed by Asago City in Hyogo with 38.3 degrees and Osaka's Hirakata City with 38.2 degrees. The intense heat is expected to continue on Tuesday. Daytime highs will reach 38 degrees in Aizuwakamatsu City in Fukushima and Nagaoka City in Niigata; 37 degrees in the cities of Yamagata, Tottori and Saga; 36 degrees in the cities of Nagoya, Hiroshima and Fukui; and 35 degrees in the cities of Osaka, Utsunomiya and Kumamoto. Weather officials say the scorching hot weather will continue through around next Monday mainly in northern and eastern Japan, as there will be sunny days due to a high-pressure system covering the regions. A long spell of intense heat is affecting the health of many people, causing deaths from heatstroke. People are advised to visit the website of the Environment Ministry to check the heat index, which indicates the level of heatstroke risk based on temperature and humidity. They are also advised to refrain from sports in outdoor settings or indoors without air conditioning. Authorities urge people to properly use air conditioners and frequently drink water even when not feeling thirsty.
