Impeachment complaint filed against Philippine Vice President Duterte NHK

Civil society activists in the Philippines have filed an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte. She has recently sparked a stir with remarks threatening to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr..

The activists filed the document in the House of Representatives on Monday. Former senator Leila de Lima claims several grounds for impeachment, such as culpable violations of the constitution and graft.

The lower house has been investigating the vice president over the alleged misuse of funds. She denies any wrongdoing.

The complaint also refers to the death threats Duterte made against Marcos. But the president said on Friday congress should not waste time on this.

"None of this will help improve a single Filipino life. As far as I am concerned, it's a storm in a teacup," he added.

The vice president is a daughter of former President Rodrigo Duerte. She was Marcos' running mate in the 2022 elections but their ties soured over time.
