Reuters news agency says US President-elect Donald Trump's transition team is discussing the possibility of direct talks between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. But it notes that Trump has not made a final decision. Reuters reported the news on Tuesday. It quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that the Trump side's initial goal would be to basically re-engage. But those people pointed out that further policy aims or a precise timetable have not been set. The report also cited a source as saying that the issue may take a backseat to more pressing foreign policy matters, such as the tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine. Trump held three meetings with Kim during his presidency. He was hoping to make progress in the effort to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. The meeting between Trump and Kim in 2018 in Singapore was the first-ever US-North Korea summit. But the two countries have failed to narrow their differences, and no progress has been made as far as bilateral relations are concerned. On Friday, Trump said that former State Department official Alex Wong will be the deputy national security adviser in his new administration. The president-elect, who will be inaugurated in January, said Wong helped negotiate his earlier summit talks with Kim.
