US President Donald Trump says he sent a letter to Iran calling for negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program.
Trump made the revelation in an interview with Fox Business Network on Friday. He said the US cannot allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon.
He also said, "There are two ways Iran can be handled: militarily, or you make a deal," adding he would prefer the latter option.
Last month, Trump signed a document aimed at restoring maximum pressure on Iran, including tougher sanctions. He also urged Tehran to engage in talks and expressed a willingness to negotiate an agreement that would help Iran's economy.
It remains to be seen whether Iranian leaders will agree to talks, as Trump unilaterally pulled the US out of an international nuclear deal during his first term. Under the 2015 pact, Iran would restrict its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.
Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations said the country had not yet received the letter from the US president.
