Tokyo's benchmark stock index briefly touched the 40,000 level on Thursday for the first time in about two months. This followed the tech-heavy Nasdaq in the US hitting a record high overnight. The Nikkei 225 ended at 39,849, up 1.2 percent, with semiconductor-related shares leading the way. At one point the index was up more than 700 points, but it edged back later. The result extends the Nikkei's winning streak to 4 days. It comes on the heels of the Nasdaq surge in New York. Investors bought in after the US Consumer Price Index for November was in line with expectations, reinforcing the view the Federal Reserve is likely to cut rates at its meeting next week.
