Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged G20 leaders to use their influence to ensure the fighting in the Middle East does not expand into a wider conflict.

Modi made the remarks at an online meeting of the G20 leaders on Wednesday.

After warning of the dangers of "insecurity and instability," Modi said, "We, in India, believe that terrorism is unacceptable. Civilian deaths anywhere must be criticized."

He welcomed the agreement between Israel and Hamas to pause their fighting for four days and to exchange hostages. He also underscored the need for timely and continuous humanitarian aid.

Russian President Vladimir Putin made a rare appearance at the meeting. He has skipped other gatherings with Western leaders, including the G20 summit in September, since launching the war in Ukraine.

Putin once again defended the war. He said, "Some of our colleagues said in their speeches that they were shocked by the ongoing 'aggression' of Russia in Ukraine. Yes, of course, military actions are always a tragedy."

He added that Russia has never refused peace talks and blamed Ukrainian leaders for stepping back from the negotiating table.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio criticized Russian leaders. He said their invasion has "shaken the foundations" of sustainable development.
