Taiwan's Vice Premier Cheng Wen-tsan is visiting Japan. Taiwanese media report Cheng's visit to Japan is the first in 29 years by a sitting vice premier. Taiwanese authorities say Cheng is on his four-day trip to Japan that began Monday. Taiwan's Executive Yuan, or Cabinet, has not disclosed his itinerary. But Cheng wrote on his Facebook account on Tuesday that he visited Japan and met with the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party Vice President Aso Taro, among others. Cheng added they had in-depth talks about closer ties between Taiwan and Japan. Japan and Taiwan broke off diplomatic relations when Japan and China normalized relations in 1972. Japan has since been taking a cautious stance about accepting visits by senior Taiwanese officials out of consideration for China, which claims that Taiwan is part of its territory. But in July last year, Taiwanese Vice President Lai Ching-te visited Japan to offer condolences on the death of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.
