Fire in China's Jiangxi province kills 39 NHK

A fire broke out in a building in China's inland province of Jiangxi on Wednesday, killing at least 39 people and injuring nine others.

The state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that the fire broke out in the afternoon in Xinyu city, and the nine injured received hospital treatment.

There are reports that others remain trapped at the site. A rescue operation is ongoing.

Local media have quoted sources as saying the building houses shops and residences, and that the fire started at an underground floor.

Following the deadly blaze, Chinese President Xi Jinping issued an "important instruction," calling for all-out efforts to rescue survivors and treat the injured.

He also urged officials to determine the cause of the fire and pursue those responsible.

Safety management against fires has become an issue in China. A school dormitory fire in Henan province last Friday killed 13 people.
