N.Korea set to hold Supreme People's Assembly on Tuesday NHK

North Korea is set to hold a key parliamentary meeting on Tuesday with representatives from across the nation in attendance.

The Supreme People's Assembly meets once or twice a year in Pyongyang to discuss the country's budget, legal revisions and personnel appointments.

At the previous meeting in September, the assembly adopted legislation setting conditions for using nuclear weapons.

This time, it is expected to adopt a budget plan based on the nuclear and missile development policy announced by leader Kim Jong Un.

In the plenary meeting of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea's Central Committee in late December, Kim said that the country will develop a new intercontinental ballistic missile in 2023. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the country's founding.

He also said that North Korea needs to mass-produce tactical nuclear weapons and "exponentially" increase production of nuclear warheads.

Kim has expressed clearly his hostility against Washington, saying it is trying to form a new military bloc with Japan and South Korea. Attention is focused on whether he will deliver a speech at this key parliamentary meeting.
