Beijing subway accident leaves over 100 people injured NHK

Transport authorities in Beijing say a subway accident in the Chinese capital has left more than 100 people with bone fractures.

Chinese media say the accident took place on Thursday evening when the last two carriages detached from the train while running above ground on the Changping line.

Video footage taken by NHK on Friday shows the coupling between the two carriages severely damaged. It also shows the rear carriage collided with the one in front of it.

Beijing has had heavy snow since the beginning of this week.

Officials told NHK that the snow may have caused the train to derail.

Transport authorities suspect that emergency brakes on some carriages coming down a slope failed to function because of the snow. They are investigating details of the accident.
