Ukrainian forces have launched drone attacks toward Moscow and elsewhere in Russia ahead of the country's May 9 celebrations marking the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany. Russia's defense ministry said a total of 105 Ukrainian drones were intercepted through early Tuesday, including 19 that were shot down near Moscow. There were no reports of injuries. But four airports in and around the capital were temporarily closed. Russian President Vladimir Putin last week unilaterally declared a three-day ceasefire starting on Thursday. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that the ceasefire will go ahead. But he also said Moscow will immediately make an appropriate response if Ukraine continues trying to strike Russian positions and facilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is calling for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire. He called Putin's ceasefire proposal "a theatrical performance." On Tuesday, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov announced that foreign leaders from more than 25 countries will attend the Victory Day military parade on Friday. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva are among them. Ushakov said Putin will meet with Xi on Thursday and discuss the situation in Ukraine and other matters.
