India's main opposition party has elected a new leader. No one from the Nehru-Gandhi family, which has led the Indian National Congress party for more than two decades, ran for the post. The Congress party appointed veteran politician Mallikarjun Kharge as its new president on Wednesday. The 80-year-old Kharge, who is from the lowest rung of India's caste system, won with almost 90 percent of the votes. This also breaks the 24-year-cycle of having a Gandhi as president of the Congress party. Former President Rahul Gandhi stepped down in 2019 after losing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling BJP party in the general elections. Since then his mother, Sonia Gandhi, has served as interim president. With the next general elections in 2024, the Congress party chose Kharge to be their new leader as part of internal reforms to challenge the BJP.
