A large illustration by Oda Eiichiro, the author of the popular manga series "One Piece," has been installed at an airport in the western Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto. The artwork is part of a project promoting recovery from the major earthquake that hit the region in 2016. The 5-meter high and 18-meter wide work was unveiled at Kumamoto Airport on Monday. About 50 characters from "One Piece," including the protagonist, Luffy, are depicted. They were ranked high in a popular vote. Oda, a native of Kumamoto City, created the illustration to help the area recover from the quake. At the unveiling ceremony, Kumamoto Governor Kimura Takashi said this picture will witness the recovery. He also said he pledges to make Kumamoto a place that will further open up to the world, following the example of Luffy and his friends who travel across the sea. Airport visitors captured photos of the picture. A man in his 50s said this is a great work. He said he has been encouraged because Mr. Oda cooperated in installing statues of One Piece characters across the prefecture after the quake.
