Friday marks the 150th anniversary of the start of Japan's railway service. Commemorative events were held across the country. Japan's first train service started on October 14, 1872, linking Tokyo's Shimbashi and Yokohama in neighboring Kanagawa Prefecture. At the East Japan Railway's Shimbashi Station, about 100 people boarded a special five-car train. The passengers booked their seats in advance for the commemorative trip to Yokohama. A woman in her 60s from Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo, said she has been looking forward to the trip, as she got her ticket after being waitlisted. In front of the station, visitors viewed two wheels of a steam locomotive, each with a diameter of about 2 meters, that are on display. In Nagasaki City, western Japan, a wooden tram car built in 1911 is put into operation on this day every year to mark the anniversary. The Nagasaki Electric Tramway ran the tram car four times in total. Passengers, as well as railway fans who had gathered, enjoyed taking pictures of the nostalgic tram.
