The Israeli military has carried out a new wave of airstrikes on an area near the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt where humanitarian supplies are expected to pass through.
Local NHK staff who are taking shelter in the southern Gaza area where the Rafah border crossing is located have reported that several rounds of Israeli airstrikes from Wednesday to Thursday have killed dozens of people in Rafah.
A spokesperson for the Israeli military said that its combat planes launched the airstrikes on Rafah and killed a senior member of an armed wing of a Palestinian militant group different from Hamas.
The Israeli bombardment came after Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi agreed with US President Joe Biden to open the Rafah border crossing to allow 20 trucks carrying humanitarian aid to reach people in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "Israel will not prevent humanitarian assistance from Egypt as long as it is only food, water and medicine for the civilian population located in the southern Gaza Strip."
He also said that Israel will not allow any supplies to reach the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.
Trucks carrying the aid have yet to arrive in Gaza as the countries involved appear to be making arrangements.
The fighting between Israel and Hamas has left more than 5,100 dead, including at least 1,400 people on the Israeli side and more than 3,785 in Gaza since it began on October 7.
The delivery of humanitarian supplies for people in Gaza is desperately needed as an Israeli ground offensive apparently is looming.
