Japan's Empress Emerita Michiko has undergone surgery for a broken thigh bone.

The Imperial Household Agency says the operation was completed successfully at the University of Tokyo Hospital on Tuesday. She was examined and diagnosed the previous day with a fracture on the upper part of her right femur.

She reportedly complained about severe pain in her right leg on Sunday after she fell at her residence at the Akasaka Estate.

It is the first time Empress Emerita has been hospitalized for surgery since September of 2019, when she underwent an operation for early-stage breast cancer.

The Empress Emerita is expected to stay at the hospital for the time being.
