Taiwanese businesspeople, called "taishang," are returning to Taiwan to cast their ballots in the presidential election on Saturday. Taiwanese are only allowed to vote on election day in the locations that are registered as their hometowns. International airports in Taiwan have been crowded with employees of Taiwanese companies returning from China, Southeast Asian and other countries. The number of taishang people doing business in China is estimated to be about 200,000. If their family members are included, the number is said to be around one million. Many of the taishang are believed to be supporters of Taiwan's largest opposition party, Kuomintang. Chinese airline companies help the taishang get cheaper plane tickets, apparently as a way to provide indirect support for Kuomintang. A Shanghai factory worker said he will go to the polls at any cost as that is the only reason why he returned to his hometown. He said he knows voters will choose a candidate who is sincere, fair, and not corrupt.
