Vote counting to start soon in US midterm elections NHK

Polling stations are set to close soon and vote counting will start in the next few hours for the US midterm elections in some states.

Voters are casting their ballots on Tuesday.

Midterm elections take place two years after a presidential election, which is held every four years.

This time, 35 out of 100 Senate seats and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives are being contested.

President Joe Biden's Democratic Party now controls both chambers. But pre-election polls favor the Republican Party in the House, while control of the Senate is seen as up for grabs.

During the campaign, Biden warned that many of the Republican candidates have not accepted the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

He urged support for the Democratic Party, saying "our democracy is at risk."

His Republican predecessor Donald Trump blamed the Biden administration for causing record levels of inflation.

Trump said, "If you want to stop the destruction of our country and save the American dream then tomorrow you must vote Republican."

He also said he will make a big announcement next Tuesday. Attention is focused on whether he will announce plans to seek another term in the 2024 presidential election.
