Transcripts of emergency calls made before Saturday's deadly crowd crush in Seoul show the revelers' growing fear and how they urged the police to intervene.

South Korea's national police chief on Tuesday revealed the content of 11 emergency calls made before the weekend Halloween crowd crush that killed 156 people in Seoul's popular Itaewon district.

National Police Commissioner General Yoon Hee-keun said police started receiving the calls from about four hours before the crush turned deadly.

In a call made shortly after 6:30 p.m., the caller expressed the fear of being crushed to death while more people kept arriving, and asked for crowd control.

Another caller said at after 8:30 p.m. that people were falling down on the street and warned of an imminent danger.

Around 9 p.m., callers reported an abnormally crowded situation and asked police to control the flow of people.

A call at 10:11 p.m., just minutes before the deadly crush, said people were about to get crushed to death and the situation was chaotic. Screams of people were also recorded.

Police sent personnel to the site in response to only four of the 11 calls. The police chief admitted that the response to emergency calls was insufficient, and promised to clarify where responsibility lies.
