Agreement to set up climate finance fund NHK

Delegates at the UN COP27 climate conference in Egypt have agreed to set up a "loss and damage" fund to help vulnerable countries cope with climate disasters.

The details will be worked out at next year's meeting.

The agreement is the first of its kind under the UN framework.

Two weeks of negotiations were scheduled, but talks were extended to work out this agreement.

A sticking point was the differing stances on the issue.

While developing countries urged a "loss and damage" fund, industrialized countries have been more cautious.

In the end, industrialized countries made concessions in response to strong appeals.

The outcome document quotes the one from last year, with a call for efforts to limit the rise in the global average temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
