Russia's presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov says Moscow has halted a deal that allowed Ukraine to continue exporting grain from ports on the Black Sea. Peskov made the announcement on Monday, the day the agreement was due to expire. Russia and Ukraine signed the deal last July under mediation by the United Nations and Turkey. The deal has been extended three times since then. Russia had been complaining that Western sanctions have been hampering exports of its farm produce and other items. Russia argues that the part of the deal related to its exports has not been implemented. Peskov said when the Russian part of the agreement is implemented, Russia will immediately return to the deal. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the country has officially notified Ukraine, Turkey and the United Nations that it is against extending the deal. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres earlier sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin expressing his wish for another extension. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also urged continuing the agreement, but to no avail. The suspension is raising concerns about global food security.
