Japanese government sources say arrangements are underway for Prime Minister Kishida Fumio to visit Australia in late May for talks with the leaders of the United States, Australia and India. The four nations have formed a framework called the Quad. The meeting would be the first Quad summit since May last year. It would take place shortly after Japan hosts the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima. The four leaders are expected to exchange opinions on the situations in Ukraine and East Asia based on the outcome of the G7 summit. They are also likely to discuss economic and security cooperation and climate change. Observers say Kishida hopes to confirm further cooperation among the four nations in realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific, as China is becoming increasingly assertive and North Korea is advancing its nuclear and missile development.
