Media reports say Israel is considering a counterstrike against Iran, which carried out a massive drone and missile attack on Israel. Tension over the Gaza Strip is also growing as Israel may reportedly go ahead with a ground offensive in the southern city of Rafah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday convened a war cabinet meeting to discuss its response to Iran's aerial attack.

The contents of the discussions have not been disclosed. The Reuters news agency has reported that the war cabinet favored the option of a counter-offensive against Iran, but opinions were divided over the timing and scale.

Israel says it shot down most of the drones and missiles in the attack from Saturday to Sunday with the help of the United States and other countries.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Prime Minister's Office announced on Sunday that the Islamic group Hamas has rejected the latest proposal by mediators for a deal on a Gaza truce and the release of hostages.

The Israeli military said on the same day that it is calling up reserve brigades for operations on the Gaza front. The step came after Israel withdrew troops from Gaza's southern city of Khan Younis earlier this month.

Israeli media say that with no progress in sight in the negotiations with Hamas, the Israel Defense Forces may go ahead with a ground offensive in Rafah. Nearly 1.5 million people are taking shelter in the city.
