Indonesia's Semeru volcano on Java Island has erupted. Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency posted an image on social media that shows plumes of white and grey ash soaring into the sky. Australia's volcanic ash advisory center in Darwin estimates that the plumes of ash reached a height of about 15 kilometers. Japan's Meteorological Agency says the eruption occurred at 9:18 a.m., local time, on Sunday and its Himawari-9 weather satellite observed the spread of the volcanic ash. The agency is also checking whether the eruption has caused any tsunami that could affect Japan. It says no significant changes in tide levels have been observed along Japanese coasts so far. Japanese weather officials add that no particular atmospheric pressure changes have been observed in the country since the eruption. A massive distant eruption can sometimes cause changes in atmospheric pressure, leading to tidal level changes. But the officials say people should stay updated with the latest information. The agency started releasing information on tide and atmospheric pressure levels around Japan after a massive distant volcanic eruption off the South Pacific nation of Tonga caused such changes in Japan. The agency releases such information if ash plumes reach a height of 15 kilometers.
