Japan's Emperor, Empress arrive in Indonesia on first official trip abroad NHK

Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have arrived in Indonesia on a seven-day official visit to the country. It is their first goodwill trip abroad since the Emperor ascended the throne in 2019.

A government plane carrying the couple landed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport near the capital Jakarta before 4 p.m. on Saturday, local time.

They are scheduled to meet Indonesian President Joko Widodo and his wife and to attend a luncheon on Monday.

The Imperial couple are to lay flowers at Kalibata cemetery on Tuesday. The site is dedicated to national heroes who fought for the country's independence.

Those buried there include Japanese soldiers who remained in what is now Indonesia after World War Two and joined the fight for independence.

Emperor Naruhito is scheduled to make a two-day trip to Yogyakarta in central Java and visit the ruins of Borobudur temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Before each event, a decision about Empress Masako's attendance will be made, based on her health.
