Tokyo's Shibuya Ward suspends year-end countdown event NHK

Tokyo's Shibuya Ward has decided not to hold a year-end countdown event around its major train station for the fifth straight year.

The ward held such an event around Shibuya Station until 2019, but it has since been suspended due to possible alcohol-related trouble and crowd accidents.

Even though the countdown event is cancelled, crowds are expected to gather at the scramble crossing in front of the station on New Year's Eve. So, officials plan to deploy security personnel around the area.

Also, the vicinity of the iconic Hachiko dog statue will be covered by sheets to prevent people from gathering. The measure will be enacted from 6 a.m. Tuesday to 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Shibuya Mayor Hasebe Ken has also called for public cooperation to create a safe environment around Shibuya Station.
