EVs center stage at Indonesia motor show NHK

One of Indonesia's biggest motor shows has kicked off in the capital Jakarta. Electric vehicles are center stage, as carmakers from around the world roll out their latest models.

About 40 car and motorcycle brands are taking part in the exhibition that started on Thursday. Organizers expect about 400-thousand visitors.

Indonesia is Southeast Asia's largest auto market. The government is encouraging car users to shift to EVs to reduce the nation's carbon emissions.

It also wants to see the rapid development of domestically produced EV batteries for the global supply chain. Indonesia has the world's largest deposits of nickel, essential for batteries.

President Joko Widodo visited the exhibition. He said the government will continue to push for a wide ecosystem for electric vehicles, from upstream to downstream.

Car sales in Indonesia were up 18 percent last year. The sales growth helps boost the economy, yet worsens traffic congestion.

The government says it will continue to encourage Indonesia's automotive industry to be export-oriented in order to gain more added-value and foreign exchange.
