A traditional summer fair featuring Chinese lantern plants is underway in Tokyo's Asakusa district. About 80 stalls have been set up on the grounds of Sensoji Temple to sell the plants with orange-red seed pods that resemble paper lanterns. They are being sold for 2,500 yen, or about 18 dollars. There is an old saying that anyone who visits the temple during the fair will enjoy good health throughout their lives. The event dating back more than 200 years was canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The organizers say there has been a significant increase in visitors from last year, and the number of foreign tourists is about the same as before the coronavirus pandemic. A woman in her 30s said this is her first visit to the fair, and she is happy to see the large crowds. A man in his 60s said he bought a potted plant so that his grandchild will grow up healthy. The event will run through Monday.
