China's domestically-made aircraft carrier took part in exercise near Taiwan NHK

The Chinese military announced on Monday that the country's first domestically-made aircraft carrier, the Shandong, took part in patrols and exercises near Taiwan.

The military released a video showing the Shandong and other vessels navigating in formation and aircraft taking off from the carrier in the three-day maneuvers through Monday.

Taiwan's defense ministry has confirmed that the fleet, including the Shandong, has been training for the first time in the Western Pacific since last week.

The ministry says a total of 59 Chinese military aircraft activities were detected around Taiwan in the period from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Monday, local time.

The detected aircraft reportedly include J-15 carrier-based fighter jets.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson indicated that the latest military operations are in retaliation for the meeting between Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last week.
