The gunman who killed 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019 has filed an appeal against his conviction and life sentence. It's sparking outrage from survivors and community leaders.

Australian Brenton Tarrant is now 32-years-old. He pleaded guilty to 51 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder and engaging in a terrorist act.

Tarrant was sentenced in August 2020 to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

It was the first such sentence since the death penalty was abolished in New Zealand.

But earlier this year his lawyer published statements questioning whether the shooter received a fair trial.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called it an attempt "to revictimize people," adding, "We should give him nothing."

Survivors of the attacks and media outlets expressed similar sentiments, including suspicion over the motives behind the appeal. Islamic community organizations also voiced anger.

A hearing date has not yet been set.
