Japanese authorities say people should be on the alert for heavy snowfall expected on Monday and Tuesday in the Kanto-Koshin region. The Meteorological Agency says a developing low- pressure system is expected to move east along the southern coast of the main island of Honshu, bringing snow to mountains and mountainous areas in the region. Snow is also expected to accumulate on flatlands, including Tokyo's 23 wards. Up to 15 centimeters of snow is expected in the Koshin region, and up to 10 centimeters in the mountains in northern Kanto as well as the Hakone, Tama and Chichibu regions during the 24 hours to Monday evening. Up to eight centimeters of snow is expected on flatlands in the northern Kanto region, up to four centimeters on flatlands in southern Kanto, and up to two centimeters in Tokyo's 23 wards during the same period. During the following 24 hours to Tuesday evening, 20 to 40 centimeters of snow is expected in the mountains in northern Kanto, and 10 to 20 centimeters on the flatlands in northern Kanto, the Koshin region as well as the Hakone, Tama and Chichibu regions. Five to 10 centimeters of snow is expected on flatlands in southern Kanto, and one to five centimeters in Tokyo's 23 wards during the same period. The agency says if temperatures are lower than expected, alert-level snowfall may hit low-lying areas. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather information. Officials say people should be on the alert for traffic disruptions caused by snow and icy roads. They are also urging caution for snow on power lines and trees, collapsing greenhouses and avalanches.
