The South Korean military says that North Korea fired additional artillery shells toward the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea on Friday evening. The Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea fired about 90 artillery shells into the Sea of Japan from the southeastern province of Kangwon from around 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. It also said the North lobbed about 300 shots toward the Yellow Sea, west of the Korean Peninsula, from the southwestern province of South Hwanghae from around 5:20 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The two countries agreed in 2018 that they would not fire artillery shells into maritime buffer zones, the de facto inter-Korean maritime border. But South Korea claims that the latest shells fell into the maritime zones of the North Korean side. The South's military said the acts represent a clear violation of the agreement, and warned that the North's provocative actions are threatening peace and stability not only on the Korean Peninsula but also the international community. Earlier in the day, North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile and artillery shots toward the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea.
