Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is making arrangements to visit the Group of Seven member states next month for summit talks. The visits will take place ahead of the G7 summit that Japan will host in May 2023 in the atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima. Government sources say preparations are ongoing to pave the way for Kishida's visits to Europe and North America between early and mid-January for summits with G7 member state leaders. The prime minister is expected to convey readiness to lead an international response to the situation in Ukraine, stable food supplies, nuclear disarmament and climate change, among other issues. He is to seek closer ties within the leaders as well as call for cooperation to make the summit a success. During his talks with US President Joe Biden, Kishida plans to explain that Japan has revised key defense documents to significantly boost Japan's defense capabilities. The revisions would give Japan the ability to launch counterstrikes. Kishida is to also brief Biden on his policy to increase defense spending as a means of seeking a stronger alliance with the US.
