A large sea turtle that got stuck in a roadside gutter on a southwestern Japanese island has been rescued and returned to the sea safe and sound.
A resident of Amami-Oshima island in Kagoshima Prefecture found the green sea turtle in the gutter near a beach and notified Amami City officials on Thursday morning.
About 30 minutes later, more than 10 people scrambled to rescue the 95-centimeter-long turtle weighing at least 100 kilograms.
They used an excavator and a rope to pull her out of the ditch that is about 40 centimeters wide and 60 centimeters deep.
The turtle was freed in an hour and returned to the sea. Her rescuers say she did not appear to have been weakened by her ordeal.
The head of the Amami Marine Life Research Association, Oki Katsuki, took part in the rescue.
Oki said the turtle may have come ashore on a nearby beach to lay eggs and likely got lost. He added it was lucky the marine creature was found and saved in the morning before it became too hot for her.
