Trump picks seasoned trade negotiator as next USTR NHK

US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Jamieson Greer to serve as the United States trade representative in his forthcoming administration.

During Trump's first presidency, Greer served as chief of staff to then-USTR Robert Lighthizer. Greer oversaw trade negotiations with China and Japan.

Trump said in a statement, "Jamieson played a key role during my First Term in imposing Tariffs on China and others to combat unfair Trade practices, and replacing the failed NAFTA deal with USMCA, therefore making it much better for American Workers." He added, "Jamieson will focus the Office of the US Trade Representative on reining in the Country's massive Trade Deficit, defending American Manufacturing, Agriculture, and Services, and opening up Export Markets everywhere."

Trump has indicated that he will slap new tariffs on imports from China, Mexico and Canada as soon as he takes office in January. Greer will be in charge of such negotiations.

Trump also announced the appointment of economist Kevin Hassett as director of the White House National Economic Council.

Hassett chaired the Council of Economic Advisers during Trump's first term in the White House.

He is expected to play a key role in advancing Trump's economic policies, including tax cuts and holding down inflation.
