In Malaysia, torrential rains have left at least four people dead and forced over 50,000 in the south to evacuate. The downpours from last week caused rivers to overflow. Posts on social media show flooded roads, waterlogged homes, submerged cars and closed shops in Johor, the worst-affected state. A resident said the flooding happened too quickly for him and his friends to salvage their belongings. "My friends and I focused on saving our lives first, and then we prioritized saving the livestock," he said. Tens of thousands of residents have been put up in relief centers in schools and community halls. Malaysia experiences floods during the annual monsoon season beginning in November. Weather officials say the ongoing rains could persist until April. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim visited Johor on Sunday. He said the flood situation is under control as waters are receding. To minimize the impact of future deluges, the government has pledged to expedite flood mitigation projects worth over 130 million dollars from June.
