Zelenskyy expresses hope for progress toward ceasefire after meeting Trump NHK

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the Vatican as having the "potential to become historic," if the leaders achieve joint results.

Zelenskyy and Trump met briefly at St. Peter's Basilica before the funeral of Pope Francis on Saturday.

It was their first face-to-face talks since a meeting at the White House in February that ended in a heated argument. Ukraine's presidential office said Saturday's meeting lasted for 15 minutes.

Zelenskyy wrote on social media that he hopes for results on everything that they covered. He mentioned a "full and unconditional ceasefire" and "reliable and lasting peace that will prevent another war from breaking out."

The White House said on Saturday that the two leaders "had a very productive discussion."

Media reports say the Trump administration proposed a peace plan that includes US recognition of Russian control in Crimea, which Moscow unilaterally annexed in 2014. The administration is reportedly urging both Ukraine and Russia to accept it.

It is not known whether the peace plan was discussed in Saturday's meeting.

In a social media post after the meeting, Trump made no mention of Zelenskyy. He said there was no reason for Russian President Vladimir Putin to be "shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities and towns."

Trump went on to say that it makes him think that Putin may not want to stop the war. He hinted at a possibility of imposing new sanctions on Russia.
