US, Thailand hold annual joint military exercise NHK

One of Asia's largest annual joint military drills, Cobra Gold, is underway in Thailand.

Co-sponsored by the host country and the United States, this year's edition officially started on Tuesday. More than 9,500 personnel from 30 countries, including Japan and Southeast Asian nations, are taking part.

It aims to strengthen military cooperation between the US and Asian countries amid China's growing influence in the region.

Meanwhile, China joined the humanitarian aid portion of the drill in eastern Thailand on Wednesday.

It confirmed procedures on rescuing and treating disaster victims in cooperation with the US military and Japan's Self-Defense Forces.

China has been participating in Cobra Gold since 2014, yet its role is limited to humanitarian operations.
Its inclusion is apparently aimed at building trust and cooperation in the region.
