Officials of some members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations plus India and China have met to discuss the conflict in Myanmar. Thailand hosted the informal, foreign ministerial-level talks aimed at mapping a way to peace in the strife-torn country. But three ASEAN countries stayed away -- highlighting divisions in the bloc over Myanmar. Myanmar's junta-appointed foreign minister, Than Swe, was among those at Monday's get-together in Pattaya. The meeting was held behind closed doors. Details of the discussions were not revealed. But the participants likely swapped opinions on implementing the so-called 5-Point Consensus. The document Myanmar agreed with ASEAN two years ago stipulates an immediate halt to violence. Thailand had invited all ASEAN nations and neighboring India and China to the gathering. Myanmar's generals have been barred from high-level ASEAN meetings since they seized power in a coup in 2021. Current ASEAN chair Indonesia was notably absent from the meeting. Its foreign minister said the group had "arrived at no consensus to re-engage or develop new approaches to the Myanmar issue." Malaysia and Singapore were also no-shows.
