Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed recent media reports that he may dismiss Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

Responding to a question on the issue in an interview with Italian public broadcaster RAI aired on Sunday, Zelenskyy said a reset of Ukraine's leadership is necessary.

He said the shakeup could involve a number of state leaders, and not just in a single sector like the military.

The president acknowledged that the war is currently in a stalemate. He added that to win, Ukrainians must push together in the same direction.

He did not specify why Zaluzhnyi is to be replaced, but stressed that the step was necessary to defeat Russian troops.

Zaluzhnyi is popular among Ukrainians. But his relationship with the president appears to be strained, with the media reporting that the two were at odds over the plan to mobilize about 500 thousand new troops.
