Officials in Tokyo are keeping a close eye on the situation in Seoul following Saturday's failed attempt to impeach South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol.

Japanese officials say they value efforts by the Yoon administration to improve relations between the two neighbors.

But a senior foreign ministry official told NHK that it is unlikely the current commotion in South Korea will subside and that normalcy will be restored in anytime soon.

Another official said that a further decline in Yoon's political clout appears inevitable, making it more difficult for the two governments to improve ties through mutual visits by leaders and ministers.

The Japanese government also intends to do all it can to secure the safety of its nationals in South Korea as protests calling for Yoon's resignation are expected to intensify.

The government says it believes the importance of bilateral ties between Japan and South Korea, as well as the trilateral framework involving the United States, will remain unchanged.

Senior officials from the three nations are set to meet on Monday to discuss North Korea and reaffirm their mutual cooperation.
