French President Emmanuel Macron says the United States is an established power but is gradually turning away from some of its allies. His remarks follow the US capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Washington's renewed desire to acquire Greenland.
In an address to French ambassadors in Paris on Thursday, Macron added that the US is also freeing itself from international rules it promoted not long ago.
Macron also noted that multilateral institutions are becoming less effective. He went on to say that there are great powers with a real temptation to divide up the world.
The speech comes after US President Donald Trump's administration detained Maduro in a military operation in Venezuela earlier this month.
The administration, which pursues an "America First" policy, has also repeated its desire to obtain Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory. Other world leaders are opposed to the move.
Macron also voiced strong concern over China, which he described as an ever-rising power.
He said China has been demonstrating an increasingly uninhibited commercial aggressiveness, especially since the end of the coronavirus pandemic. He added that the country is now having a major impact on Europe's economy.
