Struggling LCD maker Japan Display is teaming up with China's HKC on next-generation technology for displays. The firms signed a memorandum of understanding to enter into what they're calling a strategic alliance. Japan Display will contribute its OLED technology, and together the companies will build plants in China. They want to start mass production in 2025. The sides say the partnership will also include a facility for research and development. The licensing deal opens up new revenue sources for the Japanese company, which lacks the capital to build its own fabrication plants. Japan Display was created in 2012 through a merger of the LCD units of Hitachi, Toshiba and Sony. The firm has struggled against its Chinese rivals, posting net losses for eight straight years through March 2022.
