Hamas says it will release US national held hostage in Gaza NHK

The Islamic group Hamas says it will release an American-Israeli hostage held in the Gaza Strip.

The announcement came on Sunday, ahead of US President Donald Trump's planned visit to the Middle East this week.

Hamas said after talks with the United States that the male US citizen will be released on Monday. He is one of the fifty-nine hostages believed to remain in captivity. Hamas called the move part of efforts being taken to achieve a ceasefire and allow aid and relief supplies to enter Gaza.

Israeli media reported that US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff will arrive in Israel on Monday.

Trump posted on social media that the release is "a step taken in good faith towards the United States and the efforts of the mediators -- Qatar and Egypt -- to put an end to" the war. He added, "Hopefully this is the first of those final steps necessary to end this brutal conflict."

Trump plans to visit Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries from Tuesday.
